The Sega Dreamcast was a video games console way ahead of its time.

  1. The Sega Dreamcast was the first 128-bit console in the market.
  2. The name of this console was declared as “Katana”, but was later changed to Dreamcast.
  3. It was released on the 25th November, 1998 in Japan.
  4. Just one year after its release, the Dreamcast had successfully out sold Nintendo!
  5. In the same year, it also broke the record of the Sony PlayStation, by having more than 200,000 orders placed in advance!
  6. It used to have a built-in 56k modem for connecting to the Internet and playing online.
  7. The Dreamcast was also the first console which allowed real-time online play feature.
  8. It was also the only games console that provided the facility to surf the Internet and send e-mails!
  9. Sega Dreamcast also had the capabilities for VGA and that is why a special VGA cable was also released at the same.
  10. It was the first ever games console to have motion controllers.
  11. Shenmue and Shenmue 2 were the two most expensive games ever made for the Dreamcast. The first costing $47 million to make, and the second in the squeal costing a whooping $70 million!
  12. The CDs used in this console were easily readable from the standard CD-ROM drives.
  13. At the time of its release, it was the only games console that had a hit game on every genre.
  14. It is said that the Xbox console was inspired from the Sega Dreamcast.
  15. The first version of this console was released at a price of $199.99.
  16. The logo of the Dreamcast console means “origin of power”.
  17. The makers of Dreamcast were planning for 3D games to be launched on this console.
  18. Due to the large competition, in 2001 Sega announced that they would discontinue the Dreamcast.
  19. Despite this, the console was still sold up until 2007 in parts of Japan.
  20. As of 2002, 10.6 million units were sold worldwide.
  21. In different parts of the world, the color of the swirl in the logo were different. Japan had an orange swirl, North America had it in red, whilst Europe had a blue swirl.
  22. Even though the Dreamcast was short-lived, they makers produced a few different versions of the console. The most popular being a black model with the “Sega Sports” logo on the lid.
  23. As of November 2007, the Dreamcast had 688 official games, with a number of unofficial games still being released for the hard-core fans.
